A section of rice farmers in Kabonyo/ Kanyangwal ward, Kisumu County, have decried the poor state of roads in the area.
Led by Kennedy Onyango, a resident and rice farmer, the group said the roads are impassable and has hurt their business as they are unable to access markets.
“We have received empty promises from the relevant authorities that the roads will be fixed since 2020 but nothing has been done so far,” he told Wananchi Reporting.
Onyango said farmers have been forced to use alternative, longer routes to access markets.
“One has to go up to Ahero market, which would cost more and hurts our bottom line,” he said.
The farmers said the cost of living has been rising and the move of having to pay more for transporting their goods has hurt their pockets.
Silas Abayo, a resident, said it has been difficult to reach authorities to share their plight, further alleging that some are even asked for ‘facilitation’ fees from brokers to book appointments.
He called on the area MCA to act and ensure the roads are fixed.
The area MCA was unavailable for comment by the time of publication of this article.
